Hey E-News Friends,

As this week’s picture illustrates, I’m just sitting here with Moey in my little “room” at the Meadville Medical Center fired up and ready to go for my third knee surgery, the removal of a golf ball sized lump (at least that’s what it feels like) on the inside of my knee that I’ve had since childhood.  It should be a “walk in the park” compared to the patellar surgery I had on my right knee a couple of years ago.  But, can I ask you something?  Who is responsible for designing the gowns that we are all subjected to wear when we go to the hospital?  I want to go on record and say that they are just wrong and you know what I mean without me going into any detail.  I’m just sayin’.

I don’t know if I’ll be in church this weekend, but unless you’re going through a knee surgery or something like that, I hope that you’re making plans to attend.  This weekend we kick off a critical 12 week series entitled “The Creed”.   It’s based on an ancient statement of faith familiar to many Christ followers known as The Apostles Creed.  If you’re trying to build anything that is strong and lasts over the long haul, you and I both know it requires a really strong and well built foundation.  It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about your house, your marriage or your faith.  If you don’t think so, consider the difference in the number of lives lost and the extent of the damage caused from the earthquakes that have recently occurred in Haiti and in Chile.  Most experts agree that the reason the loss of life in Chile was so much smaller, was that the foundations and construction methods used in constructing the buildings were strong and of the highest standards.

There is no more important foundation that any of us will lay than the one on which our relationship with God is built.  The most important things in life to all of us rest and depend on the quality of this foundation.  It really excites me to think about the rock-solid foundation that we are going to lay for our lives personally and for our church corporately over the next 12 weeks.  Make every effort to totally engage with what the scriptures teach us about the foundational issues of our faith such God the Father, creation, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Church, forgiveness and everlasting life.  And if you have the chance, Google the Apostles Creed on the internet and begin to read it and become familiar with it.

On a what-else-is-happening-in-the-church note there are two really significant ministry and outreach trips happening this weekend through our next generation ministries.  Ryan Irwin our G-3 (middle and high school ministries) leader, is taking 9 students to New York City over the weekend to partner with NYSUM (a ministry organization that reaches out to and cares for the needy in NYC) to connect with and build relationships with children of some of the at risk families in the city.  They will also be going out on the streets in the evening to provide blankets and toiletries to many homeless folks.  Pray for their safety and success as they seek to demonstrate the love of Jesus in very practical ways.

And then on Sunday, a group of 10 young adults led by Paul Macosko (a member of our next generation staff and the guy who gives the great announcements about cheesy eggs) are traveling to Concord, NC to build a house with Habitat for Humanity’s “Collegiate Challenge” spring break program.  They will be working down there for a week from 8:00-3:00PM where they will be busy building, framing, finishing, painting and more.  Pray for these students who are giving up their own spring break to serve others.

Thanks for supporting and actively engaging in our vital mission of eliminating the barriers that stand in the way of people experiencing the most important relationship in the world, an eternal and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Now I’m going to get back to making sure that my gown stays tied while I await surgery.

Hey E-News Friends,

Just heard the forecast for the next few days and unless you’re an avid skier, snowmobiler or if walking in snow shoes is your idea of a good time, you won’t be very excited. Typically I would be crying the blues, but tomorrow Joel celebrates his 8th birthday and his buddies from school are coming over in the afternoon to do some sledding, so I’m kind of excited about it…KIND OF excited.

Whether your plans involve skies, sleds or snow shoes this weekend, I hope they also include watching many young worshippers from McLane express their love for Jesus Christ as the kids from PowerZone lead us all in a very passionate and energetic time of singing at our weekend services. That’s right. PZ weekend is here. I hope you have invited some friends who have young children. This is the perfect opportunity for them to see what our children’s ministry is all about and why so many of our kids love this ministry. And get this…this is the first year that we will be conducting a PowerZone children led service at all three of our sites as the Church in a Bar congregation has fully launched a children’s ministry for kids in downtown Erie. They are pumped and ready to go.

Also, mark your calendars for the March 6-7 weekend. We are ramping up for a tremendous series where we will be exploring the foundations of what we believe as followers of Jesus Christ. We are going to be launching an 11 part series based on the Apostle’s Creed. Many of you may have grown up reciting this creed as a part your weekly worship experience. You might even be able to recite it in your sleep, but have you ever really taken the time to understand the powerful truths contained in this concise statement of faith that has anchored the Church, the capital “C” church, for centuries. That’s what we’re going to be doing. And because it is so critical for us to clearly understand “what we believe”, all of our generational ministries including PowerZone, G-3 (middle and high school ministry) and TNT (college ministry) will be participating in this series as well.

I think that’s all for now.

Hey E-News Friends,

How “on top of it” do you look like at midnight? If you’re wondering why I look so grizzly and uninspired in the picture is because I’d rather be in bed with the covers pulled over my head. Hey! This weekend we’re wrapping up the TRACTION series on Proverbs (can you believe it?) and we’re going to be talking about the centrifugal force that holds many of us under the covers every morning when it’s time to tackle another day. We’re going to spend our last week of this series trying to understand who we can overcome the very real and persistent force of entropy (a tendency toward laziness) in some critical areas of our lives and embrace the path of diligence. We’re going to see how diligence, good old fashioned hard work, can enable us to experience and realize some of our deepest, legitimate and God given desires.

I hope God is speaking personally to you through this series and that he is teaching you how this timeless and trusted wisdom can be lived out in the trenches of your daily reality. My prayer is that your life is experiencing transformation and that you really are gaining some traction and life momentum. You’re going to need it with all this snow we’re getting.

Just a heads up on a couple of really important weekends coming up this month: next weekend we are going to celebrate communion and we’ll be digging a little deeper to understand the powerful significance of this sacred meal for our lives. And in two weeks we will have our PowerZone weekend. This is the weekend that we do once a year where the staff and kids from PZ lead us in worship and gives us a glimpse on what God is doing in and through the lives of our children. They are pumped and working really hard. You’re going to be really encouraged by what you experience. This is one of our most significant and highest attended weekends of the year. Many visitors and relatives of our kids will be visiting. Let’s make sure we help them experience our love for them and that they belong. And don’t forget to start doing some calisthenics and muscle stretches. You’re going to need to be loose for all of the hand motions you’ll be doing to their songs. I don’t want you to pull something.

Good night. It’s time to go pull those covers over my head and allow centrifugal force to work its magic.

Hey E-News Friends,

We’re just about half way through the season marked with hazardous road conditions and I’m wondering how many of you have spent anytime in a ditch yet this winter.  If you’re answer is yes, you’re not alone.  I took the plunge back in December.  I was on my way to an early morning breakfast appointment and still waking up when I crested a hill only to find a large tree that had fallen across the road.  It may sound like an excuse, but my best option at that moment was the ditch.  If not this winter, my guess is that all of us at one time or another have ended up there with the four-ways on waiting for some roadside assistance.  Sometimes we end up there because of a tree.  Sometimes it’s due to icy or snowy conditions.  Sometimes we’re forced into a ditch because of an oncoming driver who thinks he owns the road.  But then there are those times we end up in a ditch because we haven’t been paying attention to the hazards or because we’re driving too fast.

This weekend as we continue our series on the Old Testament book of Proverbs entitled “Traction,” we’re going to learn some really powerful and practical stuff on how we can stay out of the ditch of sexual temptation.  Specifically, we’re going to look at the importance of staying faithful to your marriage, how to recognize the danger of compromising your marriage covenant and observing some of the warning signs that can lead to infidelity. This will be an emotionally powerful message to all who are striving to honor their marriage vows.

Weekends like these cause some of us to deal with some really painful and emotional parts of our journeys because it touches on the most intimate and personal aspects of our lives.  I have to believe that is precisely why Proverbs dedicates more time to the issue of sexual temptation than any other topic.  God understands just how painful and destructive marital infidelity is and wants us to understand very clearly how we can see the warning signs so that we can avoid the pain that comes from ending up in this ditch.  Pray that God will speak to all of us this weekend.

On another note, you know that we’ve been doing a ton of promotion for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University over the past few weeks.  Well, guess what?  We have nearly 100 people who will be participating in the spring course...100!  That is over 20 more participants than the course that we offered last fall.  Wow!  It pumps me up to think about 100 folks taking life-changing steps toward financial peace and freedom.  If you are one of those 100, get ready.  You will be so glad you are.  You are laying a tremendous foundation for a successful future.

On one final note, I want to send a shout out to all of the volunteer heroes who serve in our food service ministry.  In addition to preparing food for 1,400+ people at last weekend’s services, these forty servants prepared two full funeral dinners for some grieving families who had lost loved ones.  It was awesome to see how a simple meal prepared with loved by these forty touched those folks with a tangible expression of Jesus’ love.  As you enjoy some soup, a home made cookie or some cheesy eggs at some point this weekend, make sure to take a moment and speak life into one of these towel bearers by thanking them for their vital service.

Have a great rest of the week.  I hope to see you on the weekend.

Hey E-News Friends,

Moey and I had the privilege of celebrating our 15th anniversary by taking a trip to San Antonio, TX last week for a few days.  It was awesome.  This picture proves that she’s still smiling after all these years.  There’s no question that I married way above my pay grade, but I’ll take it!  We hung out with some good friends of ours who live there and endured the sunshine and mid 70’s temperatures.  I have to admit that flying into Pittsburgh was hard for me and not because I saw and aerial view of Heinz Field (that was actually pretty cool).  It had much more to do with 38 degrees and overcast skies.  Welcome back!  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t struggle some with depression this week.

That’s why I’m excited about the current series that we are doing at weekend services entitled “Traction”.  It’s a series about how we can take action and initiative in our lives and develop Spirit directed and driven momentum during a season in the year where momentum is naturally hard to come by.  This series from Proverbs is filled with common sense, trusted, actionable principles for the everyday stuff that we all deal with.  Last week we learned what this book had to say about our money.  This week’s topic deals with our words and the power they have for great good or devastating destruction in the lives of those who cross our path on a daily basis.  That’s why the weekend theme is “Words:  Proceed with Caution”.  This is an area of life that absolutely everyone of us can relate to and have work to do.  On average, we speak between 7,000-30,000 words a day.  Just imagine the momentum we could start to build in our most important relationships by being a little wiser about the use of some of those words.  Don’t miss it.

If you remember, last week we focused on what the wisdom writers had to say about finances.  No area of life is more relevant and affects our relationships more practically than money.  That’s why we are providing an opportunity for folks in our church to understand more about what God has to say about how to manage our money from God’s perspective and live in freedom in this area.  Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is the program we use and the next FPU workshop begins on February 8th.  If you are looking to build some momentum with your personal finances, you will need to register by this weekend.

I think I’m going to go and drink in some of that wonderful frigid January air.

Bill
