What barriers?

Tavia

We eliminate barriers to give people access to Christ.

We eliminate barriers...

Our Word-of-the-Week is "barriers."  (insert the Sesame Street theme song here...!)

What are we trying to eliminate? What barriers?   Simply...anything that keeps people from Christ.  Each one of us (wii...see part one) needs to be sensitive to the barriers that exist for those who don't know Jesus.  The barriers are ordinary things like...

  • Parents who don't or won't expose their kids to faith...
  • Being embarrassed about something in themselves or in their past...
  • Not having a Bible in today's language...
  • Not being able to read the Bible they have...
  • Depression...
  • Anger or fear or a family secret...
  • Silent, selfish Christians who don't get past there own salvation...
  • Not knowing Jesus is God's son and our saving grace...
  • Addiction...
  • Confusing "knowledge of God" with a "relationship with Christ"...
  • Working to please God, versus accepting his gift of love...
  • Irrelevant church services...

And the list could go on and on.  It's endless, really. Because the stuff that keeps people from Christ is as endless as the diversity of humanity.  And while the stuff is ordinary, it is complex and strong and binding and takes power to move.

So how can we possible eliminate the barriers?  There are so many? First and foremost, we eliminate them by looking.  When wii have access to Christ, we see with His eyes....new eyes that are willing to look at the whole person and love them right where they are.  We can tell we are a new creature in Christ when wii want to see the people and the ordinary barriers of their lives.

Secondly, eliminating the barriers means behaving with the grace of Christ in the lives of those around us., one by one by one....  the eliminating isn't through our own strength because we have none.

II Corinthians 12:9

"But he (Christ) said to me (Paul),

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.  That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.  For when I am weak, then I am strong."

So I think "Wii eliminate barriers" means that wii do ordinary things like give a car ride to church for a kid who can't hear about God in his home.  It's meeting someone who is lonely and depressed for coffee and developing a relationship that begins moving them into a community of friends.  It is sharing your story of overcoming pornography with someone who you know is struggling and destroying their marriage.  It is teaching someone to read and giving them a Bible.  It is giving up time on the weekend so that church can be relevant and "the best hour of another person's week."  In the end, it is living with full access to Christ and letting him use you in your weakness to love away the barriers in people's lives.
