Why is adultery such a big deal?

Sometimes we get the false impression that God is a "cosmic kill-joy"... that he wants to steal all of our fun. Probably more so than any other commandment, the commandment about committing adultery ("...you should not commit adultery" - Exodus 20:14) leaves this impression.

But why is this so?  What does this commandment speak about the character and nature of God?

The foundation of any relationship is love and trust.  God sets this as a bedrock in his relationship with us.  His faithfulness to us secures that.  How are we different as a result of seeing this in God?
