No typo or error here. Having a “Mary” Christmas is much different then having a “Merry” Christmas. Let me explain. There is currently 18 shopping days to go before the big day...and so much more needs to be done. Gifts need purchased, the house needs decorated, cards need filled out and sent out, dinners need planned, desserts need baked, the tree needs put up, etc, etc....and this is just one of the aspects of life in the Christmas season.
Are you feeling the burden of all that still needs done? Are you carrying the weight of Christmas preparations? I know that I’ve felt it lately!
As I was reading through Luke’s gospel this week, I was reminded of the story in Luke 10:38-42 of when Jesus came to visit the house of Mary and Martha. He was on his way to Jerusalem when he popped in for a visit with his two good friends.
Instantly, these two friends took two very different approaches to welcoming their guest. Martha scrambled to make the home hospitable...put on some hot chocolate, straightened up the living room...thawed some goat steaks (ok... maybe I took some liberties) while Mary simply sat and enjoyed the company of Jesus.
Martha became quite upset at this...and you can understand why! Let’s face it, the stockings need to be hung by the chimney with care...and someone needs to do it! But Jesus was quick to say these words in response to Martha’s frustration:
“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10:41-42
As Mary discovered, being present with Jesus is the ONE THING WORTH BEING CONCERNED ABOUT. JESUS is the reason why Christmas is celebrated. Are you so busy making preparations to celebrate Christmas, that you’re neglecting spending time in his PRESENCE? If so, do you feel like Martha...choked and upset in worry about all that needs to be done?
One of these two had their priorities set correctly and we’d do well to learn from them...so we can have a “Mary” Christmas...and not a “Martha” one!
Sunday, we’ll continue our series, “SILENT NIGHT” as we talk about the harm that comes from living in worry and anxiety...and we’ll talk about God’s plan to bring PEACE in the circumstances of life that cause us to worry! I hope you can make it...this message is one that you will NOT want to miss. Bring a friend too!
Have yourself a "Mary" little Christmas...and I'll see you Sunday!
