A big spoonful of yuck. My youngest son, 6 months old, hit one of the milestones of growth not too long ago. He started to eat rice cereal! For those of you who aren’t parents, think “Elmer’s” paste on a spoon! Sound appetizing? This is his first adventure away from milk and formula…and is step one toward being able to enter the world of wonderful food!
This means two things for us as parents: (1) Avoid absolutely anything that could potentially cause a sneeze while at the table (**trust me…this can create a mess that will take weeks to discover the breadth of its fallout) and (2) its not too long until he’s able to feed himself!
My son is growing and it’s exciting to watch this process. Growth seems to happen slowly in the day-to-day realities of life…but in the big picture, it’s happening faster than my wife and I would like it to! (I’ll be content with shoveling the gross spoonfuls of white paste-like food for now.)
As I thought about this concept, this verse came to mind:
Philippians 1:6 – “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
For those of us who are in the new life that Jesus offers, as God’s children, we are in a growth “process”…and we all start out like babies. For a time, we are fed until we learn to eat for ourselves. Then, it’s our job to “eat” the good things that encourage growth. And, God grows us! He even promises not to give up on us as we’re in the process. He has started a good work inside each of us that He will continue working on every day of our life!
If this series in Romans has taught me anything…it’s that God is interested in the day-to-day practicalities of life. This is where He does His growing. We don’t always see it because growth happens slowly (ever watch a plant grow?). However, we are in a growth process. Every minute counts. God has promised to do the growing. Don’t give up if you aren’t where you think you should be. God hasn’t given up on you. I want to encourage you today to keep going…and God will keep growing.
This Sunday, we’ll conclude our series on Romans 12 called, “What am I here for?” I hope you’ve gained some practical, day-to-day advice on living. This Sunday will be our last installment of Romans 12. Hope you can join us.
As I know that my son is growing every day, I am enjoying the process of watching him grow. God is growing him and I believe that God is growing me too. Friends, we’re on a journey and I think it brings God great joy when we find enjoyment and purpose in the day-to-day realities we’re in…seeing each moment as an opportunity for growth and learning…and keeping in mind that God has us in a process. His process will grow us into the people He’s created us to be…people who literally represent Him and the love He stands for in the world.
Keep going... God will keep growing.
